Changing Education.......

Hi folks - have just watched this video about the past and future of education - the dialogue is by Sir Ken Robinson along with some very clever animation. Quite thought provoking! The part about the study on Lateral Thinking was especially interesting and the video made me think a lot about the world focus on 'standards' in education and where they are driving us. Entertaining as well!

  1. Funny, I almost posted that one myself. Found on Greg's blog? I am not posting here anymore Dave as you had suggested you were going to link into my 'Same Page'? Saves posting twice. Cheers

  2. Far out brussel sprout! Are our schools really that bad? I am freaked out by the thought that my 5 year olds's divergent thinking ability is going down the toilet.
The thing that springs to mind is "National Standards" which is really a step backwards towards "factory" teaching. The new curriculum needs to fight back before it's too late.
Has your BOT joined the group of schools (including Cromwell Primary) protesting against the ministry? We need to stand up and fight!!!!!!!

  3. Presumably, all our pupils can think divergently - as long as they can read and write at the national standard also. Do National Standards really impede divergent thinking??? OTJs should allow us opportunities to celebrate divergent thinking in a range of contexts AND demonstrate that a child meets (or doesn't meet) a given standard. They are not mutually exclusive! In order to think divergently about something, you must first demonstrate a basic understanding of it...

There are several reasons why National Standards are a major concern, however I do feel that this one (divergent thinking) has been well considered. No 'national test' is temporary evidence of this.

Sorry for being long winded, but I wanted to comment on something to get a goodie bag so picked up on Danella's comment.
